Tips for Preparing for VBAC
A vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is a big decision — and a major change from your last birth. That’s why preparation is key if you're hoping for a successful VBAC. With the right knowledge and support, you can start prepping for your VBAC now.

Around 15% of births are vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) today, and they’re growing increasingly common. At Trusted Women’s Health Center in Kendall and Miami, Florida, experienced OB/GYN Sidiq Aldabbagh, MD, believes that women deserve to make the birthing choices that make sense for their lives.

Dr. Aldabbagh leads our talented team in providing expert VBAC support, starting with comprehensive prep. This month, we’re covering some of our best tips to prepare for a successful VBAC.

Choose the right doctor

VBACs are more complex than a vaginal delivery with no prior births, so it’s vital that you have an OB/GYN with experience in this specific area.

Not all doctors are equally comfortable or experienced with VBACs. With Dr. Aldabbagh, you get an OB/GYN who supports your choices — and he has an excellent track record of successful VBACs.

Optimize your physical health

We emphasize optimizing your health during all pregnancies, and that becomes more important than ever for a VBAC.  Expectant moms need to manage the risk factors for the conditions that may have led to their prior C-section, for example, gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.

We help you take steps to reduce your risk of these complications through staying active, good nutrition, managing your weight gain carefully, and other approaches tailored to you.

Look after your mental health

Don’t neglect your mental health during pregnancy either. A successful VBAC is as much about your mental and emotional preparation as it is about your physical health. Surround yourself with a strong support system. We’re happy to be part of that support system, and we always tell patients that having support from their partner, family, or friends is important.

We might recommend a support group with other VBAC moms or personal counseling as you get ready for your VBAC. When you look after your mental health, you’ll feel more confident and empowered as your due date approaches.

Understand that birth plans can change

Our goal is always to help you have the birth story you want, but we never compromise your safety or that of your baby. Dr. Aldabbagh explains the plans for your VBAC from his perspective as your physician so you can know what to expect.

Sometimes, unfortunately, birth plans simply don’t go according to script. There are many factors that can change during pregnancy and delivery. Dr. Aldabbagh accounts for all possibilities as he plans your VBAC. He explains how your birth plan may have to change suddenly, and helps you prepare for and fully understand all the possibilities.
