Menstrual Health & Hormones

Irregular periods are most commonly caused by hormonal imbalances — particularly PCOS, thyroid disorders, and elevated prolactin. Other causes include perimenopause, extreme exercise or weight loss, stress, eating disorders, and certain medications. Dr. Aldabbagh evaluates with blood work and ultrasound to identify the underlying cause.

A normal cycle is 21–35 days long, lasting 2–7 days, with blood loss of 30–80 mL. Anything significantly outside these parameters — cycles shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, lasting more than 7 days, or heavy enough to soak a pad/tampon hourly for several consecutive hours — warrants evaluation.

Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is commonly caused by uterine fibroids, adenomyosis (endometrial tissue growing into the uterine wall), endometrial polyps, hormonal imbalances (PCOS, thyroid disorders), bleeding disorders, or in rare cases, endometrial cancer. Dr. Aldabbagh evaluates with ultrasound, blood work, and endometrial sampling when indicated.

Natural menopause occurs at an average age of 51, with a normal range of 45–55. Menopause before age 40 is called premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and requires prompt evaluation and treatment to protect bone health and cardiovascular function.

Hot flashes are sudden sensations of intense warmth, sweating, and flushing caused by declining estrogen levels triggering the body's temperature regulation system. They are the most common menopause symptom. Effective treatments include hormone replacement therapy (most effective), SSRIs/SNRIs, gabapentin, and the new FDA-approved non-hormonal option fezolinetant (Veoza).

Pregnancy & Prenatal Care

Schedule your first prenatal visit as soon as you have a positive pregnancy test — ideally between weeks 6–10. Earlier is better, as the first visit establishes your due date, confirms the pregnancy with ultrasound, and begins important first-trimester screenings. Call (786) 931-6067 to book promptly.

First-trimester combined screening (nuchal translucency ultrasound + blood tests at 10–13 weeks), cell-free fetal DNA (NIPT/non-invasive prenatal testing, from 10 weeks), second-trimester quad screen (15–20 weeks), anatomy ultrasound (18–22 weeks), and glucose tolerance test (24–28 weeks) are all available. Dr. Aldabbagh discusses each option and its implications.

Yes — for most uncomplicated pregnancies, moderate exercise (150 minutes/week) is safe and beneficial. Recommended activities include walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and stationary cycling. High-contact sports, activities with fall risk, and lying flat on your back after the first trimester should be avoided. Dr. Aldabbagh provides personalized guidance.

Avoid raw or undercooked meat, fish, and eggs; high-mercury fish (shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish); unpasteurized dairy and juices; deli meats (unless heated to steaming); raw sprouts; alcohol; and excessive caffeine (limit to <200mg/day). Dr. Aldabbagh provides detailed nutrition counseling at your prenatal visits.

An OB-GYN (Obstetrician-Gynecologist) is a physician with 4 years of medical school and 4 years of surgical residency training. Midwives are advanced practice clinicians who manage normal, low-risk pregnancies and births. Dr. Aldabbagh, as a board-certified OB-GYN, manages the full spectrum from routine to high-risk and complex pregnancies, and performs surgery when needed.
