When to Start Seeing a Gynecologist
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that young women have their first gynecological visit between ages 13 and 15. This initial visit is typically a conversation — a physical exam and Pap smear are usually not required until age 21. Early visits help establish a trusted relationship with your doctor and allow you to ask questions about puberty, menstruation, and overall health.
Annual Wellness Exams — Why They Matter
Once you've established care, annual gynecology appointments are essential for every woman regardless of age. These visits include a pelvic exam, breast exam, blood pressure check, and a review of any new symptoms or concerns. Pap smears are recommended every 3 years for women ages 21–65, or every 5 years combined with HPV testing.
Signs You Should See a Gynecologist Soon
Don't wait for your annual exam if you experience any of the following:
- Irregular, painful, or unusually heavy periods
- Pelvic pain or pressure
- Unusual vaginal discharge or odor
- Pain during intercourse
- Urinary leakage or urgency
- Symptoms of pregnancy
- A lump or change in breast tissue
- Missed periods when not pregnant
- Menopausal symptoms affecting quality of life
Gynecology During Pregnancy
As soon as you suspect or confirm pregnancy, schedule a prenatal appointment as early as possible — ideally before 10 weeks. Early prenatal care significantly improves outcomes for both mother and baby. Dr. Aldabbagh provides comprehensive prenatal care from the first trimester through delivery planning.
Gynecology After Menopause
Menopause does not mean you no longer need a gynecologist. Annual exams remain important for monitoring bone density, cardiovascular health, hormone levels, and screening for gynecologic cancers. If you are experiencing hot flashes, mood changes, or sleep disruption, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) may significantly improve your quality of life.
