What is the IUD?
The Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a birth control method that is implanted in the uterus. This device is over 99 percent effective and is one of the leading options for women who want a long-term birth control solution. There are 2 kinds of IUDs, the copper IUD (ParaGard) and the hormone IUD (either Mirena or Skyla.) ParaGard prevents pregnancy for as long as 10 years, Skyla prevents pregnancy for 3 years, and Mirena prevents pregnancy for 5 years. Once the IUD is implanted, it doesn’t need to be changed or maintained for a number of years in most cases. This convenience makes it a very popular option for birth control today.
What is the Birth Control Implant?
The birth control implant, Nexplanon, is implanted in the upper arm. This type of birth control is hormone based, delivering progestin continuously for up to 3 years. The birth control implant is over 99 percent effective, giving it the same level of effectiveness as the IUD. Once the implant is placed, it doesn’t need to be changed or maintained until the 3 year period is up or the patient decides that she wants to get pregnant.
What Are Oral Contraceptives?
Oral contraceptives, also known as birth control pills, are taken on a daily basis to prevent pregnancy. While oral contraceptives can be as much as 99 percent effective, the effectiveness rate declines considerably when the pills are not taken exactly as intended. Missed doses can leave a woman vulnerable to pregnancy, so this type of birth control is best for a person who can commit to taking it exactly as directed.
