5 Ways To Overcome Postpartum Depression

You would think that after nine months of a hellish pregnancy, I would be beaming with joy and gratitude for my baby boy. At least I thought I’d be. Instead, I discovered that the week or so after delivery was the hardest time of my life.

I wanted to share my experience to let you know that is okay to seek help. Really. Help is good and sometimes what you have to do to make it through another day. Whether it is postpartum or just the stressors of everyday life – seeking help and leaning on a supportive friend or doctor during a difficult time will make everything so much better.

Read through my tips on how I overcame this heaviness and how you can too. Always remember, this too shall pass.

This is Normal

Queen – remind yourself that nothing is wrong with you. Write it on your mirror if you have to. This happens to the best of us, you’re not alone in this and you definitely are not a failure.  You will power through with the love, support, and the help that you need.

Talk It Out

Now more than ever it is so powerful to lean on your tribe. Reach out to friends, family, or perhaps even a stranger. You won’t believe how many mothers have gone through this. Talking it out will help you feel understood, heard, and even relieved. Everyone has had a different experience and there are plenty of places to get help and advice to get you through this awful time.

Let Perfectionism Go

Being a mother is far from being perfect. Give yourself permission to be human and to make mistakes. You’re doing the best you can…we all are. You simply have to accept that no one is perfect and that some things are out of your control.

Get Out

Take a trip to Target solo or take a spa day to yourself. I know that may feel like the last thing you want to do, but go out anyway. Consider planning a trip with your older children. Whatever it may be, get out of the house and do something fun to take your mind off the blues.

Seek professional help

I wouldn’t have been able to get through those few weeks without my team of doctors. And yes, it was over in a few weeks. If self-help is no longer working, keep your doctor in tune with your feelings and seek the professional help you may need to be yourself again. This is not a sign of being a weak; it’s a sign you’re strong enough to get the help you need.
